Different Key Types

Basic Key And Fob

This is the most basic type of car key available.

The “basic key” is just that metal blade you stick in the ignition to start the car and unlock the doors.

Then there’s the “key fob,” which you might also hear called a remote or transmitter.

It’s the electronic gadget that lets you lock and unlock the car with the push of a button.

If you lose or break your basic key, a locksmith or dealer can cut you a new one. But if it’s the key fob that’s giving you trouble, you’ll need to get it programmed, and our dealership team can totally handle that for you.

Transponder Key And Fob

Transponder keys are like the superheroes of car security! They’ve got this nifty microchip tucked inside the plastic head of the key.

This chip sends out a special signal that your car’s ignition system is on the lookout for.

If it doesn’t pick up the right signal, your car’s not going anywhere. These keys can either have a basic cut or be laser-cut, but what really sets them apart from regular keys is that chip.

Also, it needs to be programmed to match your car. Lucky for you, we’ve got all the gear to handle that programming for you!

Switchblade Keys

Switchblade keys are pretty cool because they’ve got this nifty key shank that folds right into the key fob when you’re not using it.

Just press a button, and bam, it pops out! The key part can be either a basic cut or a fancy laser cut.

One little perk of this design is that if you mess up just the key blade, you might be able to swap it out without having to replace the whole fob.

But heads up, if you lose the whole thing, you’ll need to get both the key and the fob replaced and programmed.

Laser Cut Keys

Laser-cut keys stand out because they’ve got a bit of a thicker shank and those cool “sidewinder” cuts on the face instead of the edges. You need special cutting machines to make them.

These keys also contain transponder chips and therefore need to be programmed to the vehicle. Due to the specialized equipment required, not all locksmiths or hardware stores can cut them.

Dealerships usually take care of replacements, and it’s best to go with ones certified by your car’s OEM manufacturer.

Smart Key (Keyless Entry)

A keyless entry remote, or “smart key,” lets you hop into your car and start it up just by pressing a button.

Most of the time, you don’t even have to fish it out of your pocket or purse.

These gadgets use fancy rolling security codes to keep your ride safe from thieves.

With all the high-tech stuff and how they’re synced up with your car’s computer, if you ever need a replacement, you’re going to need to go through a certified dealership or official parts retailer.
