A Quarter Century of Hybrid-Electric Hondas In North America

25 Years Of Hybrid-Electric: Honda’s Legacy

Honda is celebrating 25 years of hybrid-electric sales in North America, a journey that began with the original Honda Insight, the first Honda hybrid-electric vehicle offered in Canada. This legacy endures today, with hybrid-electric vehicles playing a pivotal role in the company’s electrification strategy.

“Honda has been making hybrid-electric history in Canada for 25 years, it began with the Insight and our electrification journey continues with our core hybrid models, the Civic, CR-V and Accord,” said Emile Korkor, Assistant Vice President, Honda Canada. “Our increasingly popular hybrid models are a strategic part of our long-term electrification strategy, toward our ultimate global goal of carbon neutrality for all our products and corporate activities by 2050.”

In Canada, over 30% of Honda brand sales now consist of hybrid-electric vehicles, with the Civic, Accord, and CR-V each showcasing the renowned two-motor hybrid-electric system.

THE INSIGHT: The First Electric-Hybrid Honda

Constructed alongside the NSX and S2000 sports cars at Honda’s Takanezawa Plant in Japan, the acclaimed, first-generation Honda Insight continues to be the most fuel-efficient mass-production vehicle Honda has ever offered in Canada, featuring fuel economy ratings of 3.8 L/100km in the city and 3.4 L/100km on the highway*.

Honda engineers crafted a range of innovative technologies, featuring the all-new Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid powertrain. This suite also includes the world’s smallest, lightest, and most efficient 1.0-litre gasoline automobile engine, a refined aerodynamic design, and a lightweight aluminum body and structure.

Insight's state-of-the-art aerodynamics and the use of aluminum for the two-seater's exterior and frame were crucial in attaining its remarkable fuel efficiency.

This vast expertise, along with many of the same technologies, was utilized in the Insight's design to create a novel lightweight aluminum structure that provided high body rigidity and advanced safety features at a lower cost.

BUILT IN ONTARIO: Civic Sedan Hybrid

Current Honda hybrid-electric models are produced in both Canada and the U.S. The Honda CR-V Hybrid is put together at three locations: Honda of Canada Mfg. in Ontario, the East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, and the Indiana Auto Plant.

The Accord Hybrid is manufactured at the Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio. The Civic Sedan Hybrid is crafted at Honda of Canada Mfg., while the Civic Hatchback Hybrid is assembled at the Indiana Auto Plant.

Associates at Honda Power Unit Operations in Ohio are responsible for constructing both the two-motor hybrid-electric power unit at the Ohio Transmission Plant and the 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine at the Anna Engine Plant for the Civic, Accord Hybrid, and CR-V Hybrid models.

ELECTRIFYING HONDA: Going Carbon Neutral

In alignment with the company's global objective to achieve carbon neutrality across all products and corporate activities by 2050, Honda envisions that battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles will constitute 100% of its vehicle sales by 2040.

Hybrid-electric vehicles are integral to Honda's electrification strategy, which focuses on incorporating hybrid-electric powertrains into its main models.

In Canada, hybrid-electric versions, equipped with the renowned fourth-generation Honda two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain, now represent over 50% of Accord and CR-V sales. The forthcoming 2025 Civic Hybrid models are expected to eventually constitute about 60% of Civic sales.

Cumulative sales of Honda's electrified vehicles in North America have exceeded the one million mark. This year, Honda introduced the Honda Prologue, marking the brand's entry into the all-electric SUV market.

By late 2025, Honda will begin producing its own electric vehicles, using the newly developed Honda e:Architecture platform, at the Honda EV Hub. This facility will provide the flexibility to produce petrol, hybrid-electric, and electric vehicles on a single production line.
